Here is what I found out about last night's amazing sky...the lights were reported as being seen from Michigan to Mississippi. Too bad we don't have a picture of what we saw from our place! I don't know if it would've turned out well, but now I wish we had tried taking a few shots! It was a really clear night. Here is what I read about the cause....The red color (like what was in the sky last night) is produced when charged particles interact with oxygen about 200 miles above the surface of the earth. Believe me, many northern lights are far more spectacular...but what fun to get to see something so rare and unexpected!
